Paul Ryan: No 'Dreamers' Language In Spending Deal

Quote:

House Speaker Paul Ryan rejected the idea of adding language to protect so-called Dreamers into a year-end spending deal that Congress must pass in the next few weeks.

"It should be considered separately on its own merits," Ryan told reporters Thursday.

That comment was aimed at shutting down calls from Democrats and even some Republicans to add the language into the spending bill that's needed to avoid a partial government shutdown in early December.

Thursday morning, a dozen House Republicans joined Democrats by calling for language creating a legislative program similar to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that President Trump has said would be rescinded in March.

The bipartisan group predicted that DACA language would get 300 votes in the House.

Ryan said Republicans have not yet decided how to move forward yet with the DACA program, which President Trump terminated in the face of legal challenges. Trump has also called on Congress to pass a DACA bill.

The Dreamers are younger immigrants who arrived in the United States illegally as children. Nearly 800,000 of them took advantage of former President Barack Obama's DACA program, which allows them to stay and work in the United States.

Many Republicans want strong border security or money for a southern border wall in exchange for extending the DACA program.

"Active discussions with our members are underway about how DACA legislation should occur," Ryan said.

Lol he can find the votes in his caucus to pass the spending bills then. How long are they going to discuss how to move forward for crying out loud?

Lol, and here I thought there would be a big battle at the end of the year.

Looks like R's just gonna bully the D's to just get in line for the spending bill.

Ah well...I guess we just gotta see what happens I suppose.

What say you, libertarian1776? Is this just another political posturing by the Speaker of the House?

He's just holding frame ladies and gentlemen. Can't go all in at the expense of pissing of the party's constituents.

he doesnt have the math (votes) to pass an omnibus without democratic votes.

obviously the freedom caucus (31 members) won't vote for any spending (omnibus) bill that adds to the deficit.

243-31 = 212

take out those 31 far-right members, they are only at 212 votes, they need 218.

What I see is that there will be no spending bill and we'll have a nice old fashioned government shutdown.

Pretty much. Either he'll have to agree to cuts moderates will find unacceptable or he'll have to rubber stamp whatever ransom list that democrats hand him. I guess he is covering his own ass as speaker. Freedumb caucus already ousted one speaker out and Ryan got in as the compromise candidate. Man really lacks the skill that Boner had in cat herding.

they always come up with something in the last minute or during the shutdown.

impossible not to have a DACA fix within the time frame.
