Economic benefits of DREAM

Thought it was pertinent to remind people about this (always to be found in the sticky on this page):

ECONOMIC

Quote:

Because the DREAM Act would lead more immigrants to graduate from high school and college, it would also increase tax revenues and reduce government expenses. This positive fiscal impact is likely to be quite large. For example, based on estimates in a 1999 RAND study, an average 30-year-old Mexican immigrant woman who has graduated from college will pay $5,300 more in taxes and cost $3,900 less in criminal justice and welfare expenses each year than if she had dropped out of high school. This amounts to a total annual increased fiscal contribution of more than $9,000 per person.

The increased fiscal contribution would repay the required educational investment within a few years and thereafter would provide a profit to taxpayers for several decades. Some of those helped by the DREAM Act would be encouraged to graduate from high school but would not go on to college. These, too, would greatly increase their fiscal contribution in the years and decades to come. Almost half, or about $4,200, of the annual increased contribution of
the average 30-year-old Mexican immigrant woman discussed above is due to high school graduation. The rest is attributable to the effects of college attendance and graduation.

Beyond fiscal impact, the DREAM Act would benefit the economy by significantly increasing the income of affected immigrants, thereby stimulating spending and investment. Again using numbers from the RAND study cited above, the average Mexican immigrant woman who graduates from college as a result of the DREAM Act instead of dropping out would likely increase her pretax income at age 30 by more than $13,500 per year. All of these calculations are based solely on the educational advancements that the DREAM Act would make possible. The income and fiscal contribution of DREAM Act students would increase an additional amount due to their newly legalized immigration status and consequent ability to work legally. Studies of the 1986 Reagan-era legalization program showed a dramatic improvement in income for the newly legalized population. The cumulative impact of the DREAM Act on the economy could amount to hundreds of billions of dollars.

Quote:

...if we increased college completion rates of today’s Hispanic 18-year-olds by as little as 3 percent, we would increase projected social insurance payments, such as Medicare contributions, by $600 million. By conservative estimates, the investments made now into these students’ college education would be repaid by their higher tax contributions within four years after they have entered the workforce.

Maybe we can somehow attach it to an economic stimulus package - really reaching here but they attached a geothermal pump project to the bailout so the whole germane/not germane thing is ridiculous.

Not just Hispanic students--but all undocumented students who get to work legally in the U.S. will make great contributions to the national economy.

Really, the DREAM Act can do wonders to America.

^I definitely agree, the RAND report specifically reported on the Hispanic community though.

I've mailed a truckload of letters to the Economist and the Wall St. Journal at this point asking them to investigate this matter but with no results so far. If you guys see something printed on this issue we should use it especially given the current environment.

My bet is that the antis will oppose any forthcoming measures on the grounds that "Americans are hurting and illegals will just drain the money from the people" - we need to preempt this idea because it's false. Let's set the record straight.

yeah that's so true. I don't think Dream can possibly damage the economy, it means more tax payers for the state. Not to mention many many nurses, even just on our forum, possible doctors, architectures, and engineers.

Maybe giving us financial aid might be debatable in terms of effecting the economy but we don't even want financial aid, just give us a loan and we'll pay it off!!!

Remember that big time publications receive thousands of mails per day.
Yours are probably getting lost in the shuffle, like many others'.

Re: Economic benefits of DREAM

DREAM being passed into law will be GREAT for the economy, too bad that people in charge of passing laws oversee all the benefits of DREAM and focus on what they think is wrong with this law.

In DREAM's case:

Giving papers to law brakers.

I know, we didn't want to brake the law on purpose, but that's the way they see us. That's why DREAM has fail so many times in the pass...hopefuly this year will be our year :-)

I agree.
Writing and demonstrating that WE ARE CAPABLE of promoting this economy may in fact encourage some to open their eyes and let us fulfill our careers.
All you hear on the news is JOBS JOBS JOBS we need jobs, we dont want to take anybodys jobs we just want a fighting chance to help the country out, because WE CARE ABOUT IT.
Currently there is a major ICE raid in IOWA its all over CNN, and if the country needs any more substantial proof of how this in fact shatters towns, businesses, families along with driving industries to the ground then here they have it.

The way to solve this is not via seeking external help, we have to grow from the ground up our efforts within the country.
Let us demonstrate that DREAM does help.
That we do count, and CAN make the difference.
