If elected, she would be the first Latino in the Supreme Court. Ever! |
Re: Judge Sonia Sotomayor Accepts Nomination to Supreme Court
Great news.
I really hope Republicans are stupid enough to attack her mercilessly, further putting them at odds with the Latino community. |

yea i completely agree. i dont think only hispanics are getting over with republicans. i think majority of minorities are over with republicans coz of lack of support towards minorities and if they dont get it together. good luck winning future elections coz our generation is coming up. if that day occurs, when im able to vote. its going to take beating for a republican to persuade me. |

Re: Judge Sonia Sotomayor Accepts Nomination to Supreme Court
Lets not get too excited about this nomination. I feel that it would have been better for us if Obama hadn't picked her. Many Hispanic groups were actively preasuring him to nominate an Hispanic to the court, but i think it was a bad idea for now, when priority should be on CIR/DA.
From what im hearing in the news, this may have been a "Rahm Emanuel" pick a.k.a "a pure political move". Not only does this give them cover from the many hispanic voters growing impatient that Obama was not doing anything for them, it may have even taken some preasure of Obama and given him some cover to use this as some sort of downpayment on goodwill. This pretty much locks up Hispanic voters come 2010/2012. This president just nominated to The SCOTUS the first Hispanic. If he decides now to hold off on immigration reform untill 2011 or early in his second term, what can we really say to that. Will we all vote for Republicans. No! Especially if They even try to tear her apart in her hearings. |
Re: Judge Sonia Sotomayor Accepts Nomination to Supreme Court
I don't think this pick has any implications when it comes to CIR. Remember, it's the Senate that has to decide when to act on immigration. It's not like Obama is going to veto an immigration bill because he doesn't need to coax Hispanics anymore.
This might have been a political pick, but not for the reasons you mentioned. I think that one of the reasons he picked her was because he knew that she would essentially cruise through the nomination process. Look at how Republicans are reacting. McCain is praising her and even Sessions is staying neutral at the moment. Just imagine how they would have destroyed someone like Elena Kagan or Janet Napolitano in less than 24 hours. And the biggest reason he picked her is because she's extremely qualified. I mean she graduated summa cum laude from Princeton and went on to excel at Yale as well. |

I could careless about her being latina, I don't think she could care about illegal immigration in this Country.
