Sen. Mel Martinez to resign early

Multiple sources are telling us that Republican U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez has decided to resign early -- potentially opening the door for Gov. Charlie Crist to appoint a caretaker.

Let's hope we don't lose a vote.

Immigration reform group likes Crist, but what's his stand?

Charlie Crist will be the immediate successor and it looks like we are not going to lose a vote. If anything we might gain some since he is a white republican who is for Immigration reform. There could be some who might join his bandwagon.

I was thinking the same. I'm concern who can be his replacement because he is pro-CIR and Dream, but Charlie Crist doesn't sound bad. We need more white Republicans Pro-CIR to be an example for many Republicans to follow.

-_- Christ wants to leave my state in ruins and go run for Senate...

Well, lets just hope he votes for DREAM and CIR...

Re: Sen. Mel Martinez to resign early

This is potentially disasterous news for us, unfortunately. If DREAM and/or comprehensive immigration reform ever pass this year or next, it will be by a very close vote of 60, 61, or 62.

Crist is running for the Senate next year against a much more conservative opponent, Marco Rubio. Therefore, he will probably move a bit to the right in order to fight him off in a primary and thus may appoint a slightly more conservative person for the seat. Then that person can serve as an "example" of how Crist will behave as a Senator.

If Crist appoints a moderate Republican who votes for immigration reform or DREAM, then Rubio can slam that other guy as well as Crist in 2010 for supporting "amnesty" and the shrinking, more rabid, and hateful Republican base will support Rubio in the primary.

Crist can appoint a conservative who will vote against us, but help him win in 2010 or appoint someone who will vote for us, but hurt his own chances to become Senator.

We lost extremely important Republican "yes" votes when we lost Craig, Lott, and Hagel, and this may be another devastating one.

Yep, Theres been speculations that Crist will run for the senate. So i guess now, he will just appoint himself, albeit a year earlier than his run.

I hope he is pro-CIR. there really isnt any evidence saying that he is not

If hes for immigration reform, he will.
Not all republicans have that old mentality the GOP tends to have.

On a Live news conference today, Christ announced that he will not be replacing him. He just said he has received plenty of recommendations that can do a good job.

Marco Rubio is for us, I have watch this guy fight members of his own party as speaker of the Florida house from passing anti-immigrants laws. He is just very fiscally conservative.
