(CNSNews.com) - President Barack Obama told the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) on Wednesday evening that illegal immigrants would not get government funded health insurance under his health care reform, but said the debate over that plan underscores the need to legalize illegal immigrants so they can get that coverage.

“As you know there’s been a little controversy about who exactly will be covered under reform,” said Obama. “I want to be clear: If someone is here illegally, they won’t be covered under this plan. That’s a commitment I’ve made.

“But I also want to make this clear: Even though I do not believe we can extend coverage to those who are here illegally, I also don't simply believe we can ignore the fact that our immigration system is broken," the president said.

"That's why I strongly support making sure folks who are here legally have access to affordable, quality health insurance under this plan, just like everybody else,” he added. “And we certainly should not let this debate on health care--one that’s so essential to Hispanic Americans and all Americans--get side tracked by those looking to exploit division and kill reform at any cost. That’s what they always try to do.

"If anything, this debate underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million undocumented people living and working in this country once and for all," Obama said. "That's what I've said from the start. That's what I say tonight."

um... this doesn't definitely clarify whether we are going to get health care once we get temporary legal status... you never know how things are going to turn out especially with those republican nincompoops going nuts about these things (seriously, F***em, F*** those nay sayers) "YOU LIE!!!"

Personally, and I do sense a hint of ignorance on my part, don't care if I am covered by health care reform. I feel that if ignoring us in the health care plan will make immigration reform pass faster, they should leave me out. I've been here since I was 10 months old, and I definitely don't feel a sense of entitlement. Maybe I have accustomed to being left out of any type of government benefits.

How does everyone else feel about health care reform?

100% agree with you. To get things done in Washington, you have to jump through the hoops and hurdles of politics. CIR is stalled because of congress- not necessarily because of Obama's true intentions- and their painstakingly slow legislating process. A process that is more efficiently run in my mom's PTA meetings or municipal government. At this point the less talk and more action the better. If that means cutting our benefits to use that as a platform for CIR action, then go for it. Just don't spin our hopes and dreams, and deliver what you promised.

I have been here for 20 years, and have had insurance for the last 15- all paid on our own. I can buy my own insurance; thank you very much. Besides the more people paying into the pool, the lower the premiums should be. Banning people from buying private insurance, even for their U.S. citizen children is absolutely disgraceful. And if controllling illegal immigrants and their offspring is the intent, what do you think causes poor, uneducated, illegal immigrant women to continue getting pregnant????? Keep 'em inside their house, without participation in the job market and without access to contraceptive management, and you'll see how many more babies they keep having.

Republican ignorant idiots.

While Health Care would be nice, at this point that is the least of my worries. Get me my Green Card, so I can get a job, start paying taxes, and eventually get back part of those taxes through Health Care. But no, no Green Card because then I'll GET a job (at you know, like K-Mart, or MacDonalds. You know, the jobs U.S. Citizes are DYING to get but can't because of people like me, or so they say), and I'm going to DEMAND they give me back for the work I've done and taxes I've paid. Whatever.
