Senator Schumer promises immigration reform at ILIR event in New York

I wonder if this means anything... but we want Schumer to pass the DREAM Act as a stand alone bill and he's still talking about passing the CIR this year... Furthermore... by the end of March 2011!?!? I guess he isn't getting our message...

Quote:

Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) remains confident that immigration reform will be passed this year, but if not by the end of March, 2011.

gahh. he said by labor day there'd be a bill, and this summer we'd see congressional action...and yet, nothing has been done. also, the fact that he hasn't said anything about people starving outside of his office is insane, I don't know what more we can do to prove how desperately we need the Dream act to pass.... :(

Well, if he indeed is that confident that CIR will pass with more Republicans in Congress next year, tell me Senator, wha't stopping it now?
Oh, that's right, is you.

If bills granting TPS to certain groups of individuals can be enacted in a heartbeat, then DREAM act can pass just as well. Just do it.

Also, I'm quite bothered by the fact that he is openly lobbying with a group that represents illegal immigrants from Ireland, when I can guarantee you'd never see him do this open show of support at a Hispanic, "illegal-immigrant" lobbying fundraiser. The media would have a field day with it, and the conservative nuts would go on a spree of typical, anti-Mexican bashing.

Come on guys. Are you really hating on Senator Schumer this much?

He's the only one with the guts to stand up for us and this issue that so many others choose to blatantly avoid. He has lobbied and searched hard for support. It's not like he's trying to do this to keep his senate seat. He wouldn't have to do anything if he didn't want to.

He is trying his very best, and I am sure he wishes all of his promises would have come true, but he is not at the center of the political universe in Washington. It is not all his call.

Yes, he can bring DREAM to a vote, and I wish he would, but he still believes in immigration at a much bigger scale and wants to continue to pursue that first; as far as he is concerned, the immigration debate this year is not over.

All I'm saying is give him the benefit of the doubt. Without him supporting us until now, who else would we have?
