Senator LeMieux won’t back DREAM ACT as a stand alone bill.

Quote:

Senator LeMieux would not co-sponsor support the Dream Act because it is a piece of meal and he is waiting for something bigger than this and more on comprehensive immigration reform,” USF student Jessica Sanchez, 24, the organizer of the protest, said after getting a reply from LeMieux’s office.

LeMieux Statement:
Quote:

The senator believes children should not have to pay for the transgressions of their parents. But at the same time, we have to be careful any change in federal law doesn’t have the unintended consequence of incentivizing additional illegal immigration,” according to the e-mail statement.
National Review Online:
Quote:

The only piecemeal thing that might have a chance would be a modified version of the Dream Act that added two important elements: First, to ensure future kids won’t find themselves in such a situation, mandate E-Verify for all new hires; and second, to ensure that no adult responsible for putting these kids in such a predicament could ever benefit, abolish all the family immigration categories except the one for spouses and minor children of citizens. Even I could vote for a bill like that.

I think if DREAM is modified according to this National Review piece, we might be able to win over his support...

Darn! Beat me to it...

Seems like everyone is jumping on the "want something bigger" bandwagon. An indirect way of not having to deal with immigration until after elections...

Or having sex with some whore or boy intern. That's the only thing congress can do well.

I was curious what would happen to future generations, if (I mean, when) Dream Act passes.

Do you mean future generations of undocumented immigrant students? If the DA became law, then any undocumented immigrant student who satisfies the DA will be able to adjust their status granted they meet the requirements. The point of people who support CIR and/or border enforcement first before anything is that they want to prevent anymore undocumented immigrants from entering the country before any pathway to citizenship is granted. They believe that if the DA is passed first as a standalone bill, then more immigrant students will enter the US in an effort to benefit from the DA.

They're right, but they need to also take into account when to pass what, and the DA currently has it's best chances of passing now and shouldn't be delayed any longer.. regardless of the fact that enforcement should be served as well; this is what the politicians are failing to see.

Yes that is what I meant. I'm not sure if I'm correct, but from reading the current version of the bill..it states the student has to be between 12-35 years of age, and have been here for 5 consecutive years prior to the bills enactment... I took that as any future students that find themselves in our position in the coming years who are not at least 12 or have been here or at least 5 years would be in the same boat we are today..

EX:
If the bill gets passed tomorrow (I'd start believing in God) any child who is 7 I don't think would qualify.

Am I right?
