DREAM Act Portal Forum - (Opposing Side) Piecemeal Amnesty, Cont'd

This is just a column by a person who's not so fond of people in our situation, but he does point out a lot of interesting points. It does seem that the recent Schumer comment regarding the private meeting has allowed our opponents to relish in our misfortune... but it's a salient fact that there are sympathetic people from all political spectra to students in our situation.

Lastly, he mentions that it seems that congressmen are using us "merely as props for tear-jerker news coverage designed to make the case for a mass amnesty." If possible, I'd like my mother to somehow receive amnesty... but at the same time I do feel the senators are currently simply citing the CIR as a means of delaying their handling of the DA/CIR until 2011 and to simply bolster their chances of passing the CIR in one fell swoop.

This kind of dissension on the other side is obviously an opportunity for schadenfreude, and I can't claim to be immune to the temptation. But there's a political opportunity here as well: A hawkish congressman has an opening to introduce legislation that includes a tightened-up version of theDream Act (it's obviously full of loopholes) combined with mandatory use of E-Verify (to limit opportunities for future kids to be put in this situation) plus an end to chain migration (the kids didn't break the law by coming here because they were underage, but none of those adults who did break the law should be allowed to benefit). Such a bill (which may already be in the works, for all I know) would be instructive — those genuinely concerned about this most-sympathetic group of illegals could support it, while those amnesty-supporters opposing it would be exposed as interested in these kids merely as props for tear-jerker news coverage designed to make the case for a mass amnesty.

It'd be favorable if AgJOBS and the DREAM Act could pass, and after seeing positive results, perhaps the chances of a broader immigration reform passing next year would be increased... Then again, I'm guessing that it'd be difficult to see the effects of AgJOBS/DA in a single year.
