Chicago's Luis Gutierrez preaches lower expectations for immigration reform

Quote:

Rep. Luis Gutierrez, a Democrat from Chicago, said the quest to change the nation's immigration system -- and to offer illegal immigrants a path to citizenship -- needed more fervor and, perhaps, less lofty goals.
Quote:

If comprehensive immigration reform cannot be achieved with a Democratic congress and a pro-immigrant president, he said, it may be the impossible dream.
"Maybe it's time to change the language, to change the strategy, to change what it is we're shooting for," Gutierrez told a largely Hispanic audience
Quote:

Gutierrez said, the Latino community needs to target more achievable goals--and with a new insistence. He said he would like to push for passage of the so-called Dream Act, which would allow illegal immigrant children to earn citizenship by graduating from college or serving in the U.S. military.

Maybe he should have thought of that when he wrote his bill. It was way too liberal.

We should all CALL HIM and remind him to PASS THE DREAM ACT DURING Nov.-Dec.

Gutierrez is 0k.

IMO the only politician that has really played us is Obama. Even Americans started making fun of his so called support for immigration reform. That guy didn't one single thing to help our cause.

100% agree with gebodupa, Obama is the one who has played with us. Out loud he promised that in his first 100 days, we'll have the immigration reform done. Nothing happened even he had full congress and senate in his hand. Now he says he is pushing for it and he needs repub. to support him, wht the hell. He tried to gain support of the white voters by doing his health care but it bit him instead and now not only he is loosing house he might will loose senate too and maybe his second term. He should have stood with his promise with latinos and they would have supported his party today and later. Good for him and Harry Reid, as from day one harry has been playing games with the latinos and immigrants. He should goooo as he doesn't deserve any power but after seeing sharon angle then i say atleast he is proimmigrant. Don't know what else to say at this point, totally frustrated as life goin nowhere.

People don't matter. Legislative action does.

Gutierrez is preaching something that dovetails well with the DA. DA *IS* less lofty than CIR.

Let's do it.

Im just surprised of how long it took for these guys to focus on only the DREAM Act... Ive been saying for the longest time that we didnt have a chance as long as they kept pushing for a huge CIR. But Idk man I really hope they dont screw us over when the DREAM is brought up alone. There's going to be major backlash if they fail to pass it as a stand alone.
