Filbuster Reform NOW!!!
As many of us know, one of the reasons that the dream act failed to pass in 2o1o was due to fake filibuster threats. However, there is this movement that has already the support of 53 senators, enough signatures, to change the rules of committee regarding the filibuster. Even though 2011 is going to be alot more tougher than 2010, if we manage to change the rules, we could make the senate our fighting chance for the dream act or any other type of reform.
Here is an email I got from Daily kos regarding the state of the filibuster reform. A remarkable thing has happened on filibuster reform. Republicans are so scared Senate Democrats are going to pass real filibuster reform, they are begging the Democratic leadership to cut a deal. Republicans never come begging for a deal. Usually, it’s the other way around. The reason it’s happening now is because your efforts resulted in all 53 Democratic Senators signing a letter demanding filibuster reform. Republicans know we have the votes, and are desperate for a way out. We need to make sure that Senate Rules Committee Chair Chuck Schumer, who has been given responsibility for crafting the reform package, stands tall for real reform. He should not cut a deal with Republicans just to try and look "bipartisan." Call the Rules Committee office right now and tell Senator Schumer just that: Senator Chuck Schumer: 202.224.6352 (Rules and Administration Committee number) Say your name. Ask Chairman Schumer to craft a Senate rules reform package that makes the filibuster real and speeds up the nomination process. Tell him not to kill reform by compromising with Republicans. We’ve come a long, long way on this campaign. Daily Kos has brought it all the way from the fringe, to the mainstream, to the brink of victory: Our own David Waldman spent two years educating everyone on how reform could happen. Our own Joan McCarter was the first person to get Harry Reid on record promising reform. Over 39,000 Kossacks took action demanding filibuster reform, action heard by every Democratic Senator. You raised the money to allow David Waldman to work on reform full-time, so that he could build a coalition of advocacy groups demanding reform. That coalition has met with every Democratic Senator, and was the reason they signed that letter demanding reform. We brought this campaign from nowhere to the brink. Now, we need to push it over the top. Call Chairman Chuck Schumer now. Tell him to stand tall for real filibuster reform: Here is a link for more information: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/20...orm-filibuster |
Re: Filbuster Reform NOW!!!
Chuck has been a great senator and he's supported the DA it's imperative that he support filibuster reform so that republicans stop playing political games with the lives of people, such as the failure of DA

Re: Filbuster Reform NOW!!!
In 2005 then senator Obama led the charge against the Republicans who said they were going to change the rules of the Filibuster. Democrats are not going to do this seeing they know that everyone is predicting them to lose the next senate race and succeed power to the Republicans leaving them with no way to be heard. Udall (D) who is the one writing up the rule changes has said these are the rules that would be changed:
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,4573058.story LA times 1/4/2011 JIM ABRAMS Associated Press Udall's proposal already falls short of ending all filibusters. It would eliminate the practice of "secret holds" where a single senator can anonymously block a bill or nomination from reaching the floor and end the use of filibusters to prevent a bill from being taken up. It would also require those waging a filibuster to stay on the floor and actually debate the bill, a la Jimmy Stewart in the 1939 movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." Udall would also guarantee the minority the right to offer a certain amount of amendments to bills. If they went further Obama knows the republicans would stop everything in the house you would not see another bill come up for a senate vote in two years. The house is were the bill is written before it is sent to the Senate then the senate sends it back to house before its passed. So Republicans in the majority in the house can not only stop all bills coming to the senate they also could add ridiculous add on to any bill before it is to be signed by the President and put in as law. For instance if the Senate Democrats got a bill passed by simple majority in the senate when it came back to the house the Republicans could add on to it Stop Obama Care which of course the president would veto and its a dead bill seeing there is not enough majority to over ride a presidential veto. There are a lot of forces going to be working in the house and senate and if you enjoy watching the political system work you are going to see every procedure used during these two years to the next election. Just listen to how the president sounds different now with all this lets work together in his voice he knows the constitutional law because he is a constitutional Lawyer. |

Great news for future Dream Act bills.

Re: Filbuster Reform NOW!!!
The filibuster reform will require 67 votes. We have 53 Democrats. Probably, it will not pass, unless Biden helps out.

"The work-around is simple, though, and widely accepted. As we explained here, the "constitutional option" would allow a change to Senate rules on the first day of a new Session. Here's how it works. Article I, Section 5 of the Constitution allows each House to determine its own rules (by a simple majority). (Senate Rule V, which says that the Senate rules--including Rule XXII--"shall continue from one Congress to the next Congress unless they are changed as provided in these rules" (and thus taking us back to where we started) itself violates Article I, Section 5 in that it binds the new Senate to old rules and prevents the new Senate from determining its own rules.) Thus at the beginning of each Congress--before the Senate has had a change to (re)enact its rules--general parliamentary law, including the simple majority rule, applies. Under general parliamentary law, the new Senate can enact its own new rules by a simple majority." |

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/pol...ter.cnn?hpt=C2 I don't make stuff up. I was just quoting the video. There is no need to imply that I am "stupid." By the way, I have better things to do in life than researching senate rules. |

Actually everyone that is a dreamer needs to take the time to study legislative rules that way you can know what is going on. Knowing how your government works is one of the most important things you can know. |
Re: Filbuster Reform NOW!!!
The problem is that 2 years from now, the democrats might become the minority. And our need for that filibuster reform will come to play.

Probably 99% of Americans don't know the rule stated by afloo12345. I bet you didn't know it either. Either way, I don't need to explain myself to you or afloo12345. Don't bother replying, I am out of here. |
