Kyl is retiring

Will he support CIR/DA now that he's got nothing to lose? One would hope; but I doubt it.

Kyl can now push immigration reform

Sen. Jon Kyl’s decision to retire puts him in the perfect spot to champion comprehensive immigration reform in the Senate.

As an elder statesman with no need to play politics, he can perform a remarkably valuable service to Arizona by helping usher through a national solution to a problem that is tearing this state apart. His state.

Experts have repeatedly said that immigration reform will not gain traction in Congress unless Kyl and/or Sen. John McCain come on board. They are from the state most deeply affected. They have the gravitas. They also have the knowledge of what needs to be done – both having been involved in the most recent attempt to move comprehensive immigration reform.

Kyl can retire now at the top of his political game. He has a lot of accomplishments to his credit. He has the respect of Congress watchers. He doesn't have to do anything more to assure place in the history of this state.

But if he steps in front on immigration now, he can demonstrate a hard-headed determination to do what’s best for Arizona despite the criticism that will come from the far right of his party. He can do something that only one other member of Congress has the power to do. He can serve Arizona in the most profound way possible.

Comprehensive immigration reform is the solution. Kyl can help make it happen. It would be a generous and gracious gift to his state.

Re: Kyl is retiring

Lemieux didn't vote for Dream as well as Kay Bailey Hutchinson who is not going to run in 2012. I wouldn't expect anything from Kyl either.

That bring the total retirements to 5 for 2012:
Kyl(R-AZ)
Hutchinson(R-TX)
Conrad(D-ND)
Lieberman(I-CT)
Webb(D-VA)

Those of you hoping for 2013 being the year for CIR/DA need to realize that these 5, except for Lieberman, have a high chance of being replaced by anti-immigrant people.

Lemieux didn't vote for it because he's going for the Senate seat in 2012, and I don't think Hutchinson had made up her mind at that time.

It doesn't matter. Senate is an easy pass since Mccain and other GOP's are joining in.

We should be focusing on the House right now since GOP's control it. Let the GOP's in the house create the bill and pass it so Senate can take the House bill also and pass it.

Kyl's retirement won't change a thing. Reading through the post is chilling because it feels like the calculations are starting again.... :(

Maybe if they pass the McCain-Kyl border security bill first it could maybe soften Kyl up to vote for CIR I mean he is retiring it's worth a shot
