US Rep. Jared Polis calls for immigration reform to lower deficit
not that I expect anything like this to materialize but it's worth a read..
WASHINGTON — A proposal to include comprehensive immigration reform in any package presented to Congress to raise the debt limit and cut the U.S. deficit was announced today by U.S. Rep. Jared Polis. The Boulder Democrat penned a letter to President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner that outlined how comprehensive immigration reform could increase federal revenues by billions of dollars, thus helping to close the budget deficit and avoid tax increases on Americans and cuts to domestic investments. “Immigration reform would generate $4.5 to $5.4 billion in additional net tax revenue over three years,” the letter points out. “The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office scored the bi-partisan 2007 comprehensive immigration reform bill that was proposed in the Senate as increasing federal revenues by $15 billion over the 2008-2012 period and by $48 billion over the 2008-2017 period.” Polis says in the letter that by requiring illegal immigrants to register with the government, pay fees and back taxes, and correct their status, “we can drastically expand our tax base.” Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn, however, views Polis’ proposal as a sort of amnesty for illegal immigrants. “Mass amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants will be costly. The Heritage Foundation estimates that should illegal immigrants receive amnesty, the cost in government outlays such as social security, Medicare, Medicaid, and supplemental social security, would be at least $2.6 trillion.” Lamborn adds that “we need a frank discussion on immigration policy, we need to enforce the laws on the books and pass sound immigration policy. Amnesty is not a fiscally responsible policy.” Following a White House meeting yesterday between the president and congressional leaders, President Obama said the two parties were still far apart in terms of debt negotiations. For months the two parties have failed to come to a consensus on cuts to prevent the government from defaulting on its debt. If Democrats and Republicans can’t come to an agreement by Aug. 2 then the country could default on its outstanding debts. source: http://blogs.denverpost.com/thespot/...unks-it/33506/ |

No, we shouldn't be used as scapegoats in case the country does default on the debt.
This would really cause a public outcry. |
