E-Verify requirement must be part of larger immigration plan, Napolitano insists

Although the Obama administration favors the expanded use of the electronic E-Verify system to confirm the legal status of prospective employees, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said today that any expansion of E-Verify must be part of a larger immigration reform plan.

Janet Napolitano
“If you just do E-Verify, you’re not doing enough,” she told a breakfast meeting with reporters.

Napolitano said that E-Verify expansion should be part of a package that also includes the DREAM Act, which allows some children of illegal immigrants a pathway to U.S. citizenship, along with expanded H1B visas for high-tech workers and H2A visas.

“E-Verify by itself doesn’t solve all the problems we have with the existing laws,” Napolitano said.

Rep. Lamar Smith, the San Antonio Republican who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, is pressing ahead with legislation that would mandate employer use of E-Verify. Smith says that other reforms must wait until the southwestern border is secured and illegal immigration is curtailed.

But Napolitano insisted that E-Verify “can and should be part of (comprehensive) immigration reform.”

CIR is wanted by virtually everyone in this country. We know where the problem lies.

The Repubs don't want it because they think that if we get legalized where only going to vote for the Democrats. With the way the GOP are treating us, why the hell not!

So, Napolitano's CIR consists of E-verify, DREAM Act, and the H1 B Visas improvement? This CIR is limited, but I think it has a shot. The President really needs to pressure for this compromise.

Oh God, nothing is impossible for You. Please give us a Christmas miracle.

I think DA User is right; I smell an at least DA+E-verify debate coming.

Why does an H1B holder get to benefit from immigration reform, but not immigrants who have been busting their a***s and enslaved to their jobs for 10 or 20 years? At least they should include affirmative deferred action as part of this plan.

Oh, and if they want to pass and implement mandated, national E-verify, they have to include the costs in the appropriations bill funding the next fiscal year. Fiscal year 2012 begins in less than a month, October 1st.

If anyone in any of these forums has any exchange of words with those who actually make policy, should they actually debate this bill its time to ask that we not be eligible for grants, and financial aid and blah blah blah excluding private loans. If we take away these benefits from ourselves we cant be looked at as stealing from Americans. Right now the argument is if immigrants get that then Americans don't. Well i would rather have DA and no financial help then nothing which is what we currently have and will have till hell actually freezes over, unless we change the debate. Now that gives the GOP less to grovel about but its not a promise for DA at all, the next argument and you can quote me is that we will steal from the American job market. Lazy is lazy no matter what nation the passport but politicians don't see it that way. Asking for less appropriations in DA such as financial aid will give the bill some traction and some much needed national attention however i still believe in this economy this bill has absolutely no hope what so ever.
Now many in here will be upset that i said we should be asking for less, get over it. We aren't exactly willing to compromise much either, understood we don't have much to compromise with at all but financial assistance eligibility is one card in our hand we can risk getting rid of for the greater cause. Things we cant give up, the age max and min, the 0 criminal record requirement, the requirement to finish school or join the armed services. The only other card we have in our hand which we might consider giving up as well is the possibility of future citizenship. Ill take a life time green card over nothing any day.
Remember currently we have NOTHING, tomorrow we will have NOTHING, 10 years from now we will have guess what, NOTHING. If the talks happen again its time to be willing to negotiate the finer details which we as Dream beneficiaries can live without.
