NEW YORK – The top-lines from Tuesday’s special election in New York 9th District are obvious: Republican Bob Turner won a big upset victory in the contest for former Rep. Anthony Weiner’s seat, Democrat David Weprin lost and President Barack Obama took it on the chin. But the stunning GOP win had a cast of other characters – lawmakers, consultants, and third-party groups – whose political fortunes will also rise and fall as a result of the race’s outcome.

It is a new congressman to research and report on who will eventually vote the dream act up or down. I think it means a lot.

I think that the Senate and Congress will gain more Democratic seats, but right now, the presidency has a true 50-50 chance of going Republican. In other words, the same as if Obama were not an incumbent president. And then we could watch a Republican President force his party to agree to an immigration reform bill, why not? Right now, today, Obama is on his way to fulfill all the Republican demands that were part of the 2006-2007 CIR bill, except that he did not move a finger to also achieve legal status (of any sort) for the undocumented. I cannot even remember why or how we believed that Obama would be able to exert leadership.

He waited until the end of August to order DHS to consider non-criminal immigrants for prosecutorial discretion; with the clause that there are no guidelines, nor guarantee that your low-priority status will actually be considered low-priority by Homeland Security. It's still at the whim of whatever individual your case happens to land in front. Make a decision and stand by it and defend it.
