BREAKING: Judge lets key parts of Alabama Immigration Law stand

A federal judge has refused to block key parts of Alabama's new law on illegal immigration, including its requirement to check the immigration status of students.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Blackburn blocked some other parts of the law, which both supporters and critics say is the nation's toughest clampdown on illegal immigration by a state.

Blackburn said in her ruling issued Wednesday that federal law doesn't prohibit the state from requiring schools to check the immigration status of students or from requiring police to determine the status of suspected illegal immigrants.

She upheld the Obama administration's objections to other sections of the law, including making it a crime for an illegal immigrant to solicit work or for anyone to transport or harbor an illegal immigrant.

It is when it's written by the AP. Just bc it's posted on Fox doesn't mean it's not true. Now, everything that comes out of their actual mouths is not true...

But does anyone know what is and isn't being blocked. The article I read, which is not this one, isn't being too specific and since I live in Alabama and am being totally being screwed by this, it would help to know...

The provisions blocked by Judge Blackburn include:

•Stopping an "unauthorized alien" from seeking work as an employee or independent contractor.
•Criminalizing those who assist unauthorized aliens. She blocked a large section which would make it against the law to conceal, harbor, transport or encourage an illegal alien to stay in Alabama. This includes portions of the law referring to landlords.
•Stopping businesses from deducting the wages they pay to unauthorized aliens from their state taxes.
•Stopping the state from creating a new protected class of workers. The new law would have allowed workers who were not hired or fired instead of unauthorized aliens to sue employers for discrimination.

Here are some of the things she did NOT block.

Quote:

She said federal law doesn't prohibit checking students or suspects pulled over by police. She also refused to stop provisions that allow police to hold suspected illegal immigrants without bond; bar state courts from enforcing contracts involving illegal immigrants; make it a felony for an illegal immigrant to do business with the state; and make it a misdemeanor for an illegal resident not to have immigration papers.
