California Dream Act Poll
FIFTY-FIVE percent of California voters said they oppose the new state law known as the California DREAM Act, according to a new survey.
As reported in the LA Times Nov 19, there seems to be an ethnic divide regarding the DREAM Act, which will permit undocumented students who graduated from California high schools and meet other requirements to receive taxpayer aid to attend the University of California, Cal State and community colleges starting in 2013. The poll revealed that 79% of Latinos support government financial aid for illegal immigrants who attend state universities, compared with only 30% of whites. Many Californians worry that they are being priced out of the state’s public university systems, and they object to allowing illegal immigrants the same financial aid that US citizens can receive at the campuses. The survey was conducted for the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and The LA Times by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, a Democratic firm, with American Viewpoint, a Republican company. The bipartisan survey found that a narrow majority of registered Democrats, 53%, support the new policy, which was signed into law last month by a fellow Democrat, Gov. Jerry Brown. But only 23% of Republicans do. http://www.asianjournal.com/dateline...dream-act.html |
Re: California Dream Act Poll
I don't blame them. From an American's point of view, I wouldn't agree with the law myself, but I hope that this mess puts pressure on the federal government to pass the DA once and for all.

Re: California Dream Act Poll
No biggie.
I still get to pay resident tuition, and I have sufficient funds to cover my postgrad education. I want federal action, so I do not care if the California DA does not go into effect in 2013. |
Re: California Dream Act Poll
great... part of my plan just went down the drain

Re: California Dream Act Poll
This is not surprising. Nobody should be surprised, this was very much expected.

Hopefully Immigration issue heats up again, but I doubt it since getting the economy back in shape is much, much more important right now. |

Looks like they will stop it, but don't worry, just look at the massive response it has gotten. If a few more states do the same thing, the federal government won't be able to ignore it much longer. Even if we lose this battle, it's still a victory. Well played, Cali. |
Re: California Dream Act Poll
I for one am surprised. I have never lived in California but I was always of the impression it was ultra liberal
