Immigration Plan Isn't Hurting Gingrich Bid

Newt Gingrich’s immigration proposal, which would give special consideration to illegal immigrants who have lived here for many years and have deep ties to their communities, has the potential to affect millions of illegal people, according to a new study.

But the plan, which some political observers thought would alienate conservative voters, hasn’t hurt Gingrich’s front-running campaign for president.

Personally I really don't care about what these candidates want or think about undocumented immigrants. What did Obama say and what has he done so far? There you go. The guys who control the issue are in Congress. Although I do feel that Newt is genuine on this issue. He even showed some sense of understanding when he was debating Howard Dean at GWU recently. If the Republicans are smart and if they really want the White House back, they will all have to come out and tell the public, "Vote for Newt. We will pass CIR". Now that coming from GOP Senators and Representatives would really give Obama a run for his money.

Its funny, I was just reading this poll that says 60% of Republicans agree with Newt over Mitt.

I totally agree with everything here. As bad as it sounds, Newt Gingrich is the closest thing to an adult in the room we have seen on immigration for some time in presidential politics.

It reminds me of the political problem of Chinese relations in American politics in the 1950s and 1960s. The Democrats knew if they did not sound tough on China and communism they would lose to the Republicans on the Red-baiting vote. But everybody also knew it was the only rational course to normalize relations with China. This couldn't happen until a Republican presidency took the lead on it (Nixon) because the anti-communist public did not trust the Democrats to be tough enough on the issue.

I wonder if something like that needs to happen on immigration. The reality is that Obama has cracked down harder than anybody, but the dim-witted Republican base actually believes he is trying to enact backdoor amnesty, that the border is less secure, that the border is even the problem, etc.

Isn't that crazy? Yet, Obama seems to want to go tougher.

What we need is the opposite of the current political configuration. A Republican president who is a closet supporter of CIR, and a Democrat-dominated congress.

By the way, Obama is a total failure and might as well be a Republican for the policies he has put through. The ironic thing is that for Republicans he is the coming of the Anti-Christ.

Its logical. Deportation will only hurt the economy more. Let us pay taxes and help out, we can't help if you don't let us. Tax us, fine us.
