Hello everyone,

If all of you can gain access to a recording of Mitt Romney's speech at the Hispanic Leadership Network Conference on CSPAN, please do.

I watched it live this morning, and Romney seems to be revealing an immigration reform plan little by little. In his speech, he said that he cared about legal and illegal immigrants, but he reiterated that this country needs to protect legal immigration. So, this is what he proposed for the 11 to 12 million undocumented immigrants: they would get a temporary work status, leave at the end of the permit to their home countries, and apply for residency if they wished.

I have a feeling that he will be revealing a program that is similar to a bill introduced by Senator Cornyn in 2006. It is very similar to what Romney mentioned in his speech. Please read Title VI--Mandatory Departure and Reentry in Legal Status.

I just have issues with this guy. Don't even want to get started here.

But I am definitely against anything that have dreamers leaving US to their home countries. Once you leave, what makes you think they will allow you to come back? It just doesn't make sense to me. Why make us go back? I see it as a very unnecessary step. It's just a waste of time and money. It leaves a lot of uncertainty, and even away for them to kick us out "nicely."

I understand. And, we also have to assume he is consistent. He is so erratic, but let's assume that he is consistent and becomes president. The future is not looking so bleak now . . . . Plus, I think he would combine this with the military option for undocumented students.

This doesnt make sence at all. Why not let us stay here already ? Romney just wants to kick us out after work permit expires. Or perhaps will have to wait 5-10 years in line.

And cue the waiting period to apply for residency and visas after being booted out.

Which is it, 5, 10, even 15 years til we can come back? Romney flip-flops and he's only giving lip service to the so called Latin vote in Florida. There's nothing to be gained from this bill.

I agree with you, and that's what makes Romney really . . . really scary. That he might say one thing today then change his mind if he becomes president.

In terms of the waiting time for returning to this country, we have to see what Romney says about that in the following months. All I know is that he seems be listening to Senator Cornyn.

I can already see the dissaster behind this. Given the circumstances we'd have to go thru having to go home and come back (time and money issue, as someone had pointed out), sometime after the work permit expire, it is very likely that people will not leave and instead choose to stay here...again....undocumented.

This is currently the problem for the overstayers to begin with, and they're just creating another wave of undocs in the future.....believe me. Bad idea!

I agree. I mean what guarantee would people have that they would be allowed to re-enter as fast as possible if they would qualify under such a proposal?

Yup, and the fact that some may not be able to come back at all is the very reason why they would choose not to leave.
