House Speaker Boehner says Obama must lead on immigration reform

Boehner seems to be taking the Border security first approach.
Quote:

(Reuters) - John Boehner said on Friday the country's immigration system was broken, although he did not offer solutions and said President Barack Obama had to take the lead.

Immigration reform is becoming a priority for Republicans after Obama, a Democrat, won a second term in office this week with strong support from Hispanics.

When asked at a news conference whether he would endorse a pathway to citizenship, Boehner, speaker of the House of Representatives, said: "What I'm talking about is a common sense, step-by-step approach would secure our borders, allow us to enforce the laws, and fix a broken immigration system."

Many Republican leaders have taken a hard position against illegal immigrants. Obama's Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, said during the campaign that undocumented workers should "self-deport" from the country.

But after Obama was re-elected with overwhelming support from Hispanics, Republicans have acknowledged they need to do a better job of appealing to non-white voters.

"I believe Hispanics should be a natural constituency of conservatives," Republican Senator Ron Johnson, a Tea Party favorite, told Reuters.

"Unfortunately, Republicans haven't provided them with a home... in terms of some of our hostility toward the immigration issue. We haven't handled that well," he said.

Boehner has said a comprehensive approach to immigration reform is needed and that he was confident Republicans could find common ground with Obama.
I can't believe they still can't figure out why they lost. The politics of exclusion no longer work no matter how many times the 'Re-pubes' try to dress-up their talking points. In fact,I think this should be taken so seriously their should be a national immigration coalition registering pro-immigrant voters over the next 2 years in the battleground states!

The only thing I think is going to happen is whatever bill Rubio had drifted last summer, maybe an extension of the 245i and some little adjustments to the current system and they are going to call it reform.

Immigration is long overdue. There's a history pattern to it, and we're getting close to the third decade since amnesty. There's a similarity between Reagan's term and Obama's. I think it will pass during the president's second term, either next year or before the next Republican primary.

There had been no talks about 245i though. They should put the Border Security measures on the CIR.

Yikes. They're punting again. Not surprising given their history on immigration reform.

Boehner deferring to Obama allows Boehner to take a defensive position -- blocking a controversial bill is much easier to do than passing one. I don't know why they're using the "secure the border" language again either. It doesn't make sense. "Securing the border" is such an amorphous concept and ultimately a pipe dream for anyone who's actually serious about completely sealing the border.

The moral of the story is that you can't trust anyone in the GOP about immigration until they decide to take equal ownership of a bill (i.e. not asking Obama to "take the lead") or they decide to lead on their own.

Boehner wants to have it both ways. He wants to appear open to immigration reform and get more votes, but he also wants to somewhat cover his ass from right wing / tea party Republican criticism by saying it's Obama's initiative. If he's not careful, he might lose to a tea party candidate in the next Republican primary.

I agree. The border being sealed would silence the critics, but we'll see what happens.
