National DREAM Day

Hey guys,

We're gearing up for our next campaign and I just wanted to know who would be willing to help us out. As you know, we're going to be contacting the national DREAM organizations on the list so kindly given to us by Nick and Ianus. There are about 120 organizations that we'd like to reach. So far we have a few people who have volunteered, but it would be nice to have some more. We will be dividing up the list amongst ourselves, depending on how many people commit. The task is quite easy actually:

1. Look up the email address of the organizations on the list.
2. Copy and paste the letter I drafted and send away!!

I'll have more information at a later date. Please help, we can definitely get through this list a lot faster with more people. Lemme know who's down.

DREAM. Act.

To: Ianus, qingshu, VJB2, HOPEFULDREAMER, Swim19, max (sorry, I didn't feel like sending out individual PM's)

Thanks for volunteering to send out emails to the national DREAM organizations.

There are 116 organizations we need to contact. Basically, our task is to Google these orgs and find out their contact info. Once we've done that, we can just copy and paste the letter I drafted (unless we wanted to add anything else) onto an email and send 'em out. I'll take the first 20 on the list, and you guys can take 16 each according to the order I posted your screen name (which was totally random btw).

rock steady: 1-20
Ianus: 21-36
qingshu: 37-52
VJB2: 53-68
HOPEFULDREAMER: 69-84
Swim19: 85-100
max: 101-116

We will be using a dreamact.info email account which Nick hooked us up with. Please pm either me, Nick, or Swim19 for the information you will need to input into a mail client (ie Outlook, Outlook Express).

Here is a copy of that letter again:

Dear (whatever DREAM Act organization we’re contacting):

In light of the developments that have occurred in our national politics over the course of the last year, we at the DREAM Act Portal (DAP) are resolved to make a positive impact in the debate on immigration reform. More specifically, as may be ascertained by our name, we are ardent champions of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. In this spirit, we offer our cooperation in helping bring the DREAM Act to the forefront of our national awareness.

The discourse on immigration reform is largely predicated on the issues of enforcement and a guest worker program. Moreover, undocumented immigrants are perceived by the mainstream to be simply those who consciously chose to circumvent immigration law. Because of this, the stories of undocumented students, who made no such choice, are often neglected. Sadly, undocumented students have not been able to escape the generally negative perception of illegal aliens as a whole, despite the difference in the dynamics of their existence in this country. It is imperative that we break the stereotype of undocumented immigrants as a homogeneous group and bring to light the specific needs of this truly diverse population.

It is our goal to foster a national coalition of DREAM Act advocates and ultimately enact a “National DREAM Act Day,” where the accomplishments and contributions of undocumented students can be celebrated while simultaneously highlighting their particular needs. We would like to make the public aware of the fact that the DREAM Act is a unique, narrowly-tailored piece of legislation that at its core is not an amnesty. There are strict prerequisites that have to be met before any relief is granted including completion of one’s secondary education or service in our armed forces.

Support for immigration reform is seemingly at its zenith. Changes in our national leadership have signaled the importance of reasonable and effective reform. We have a great opportunity to make an impact. Notwithstanding these prospects, much work still needs to be done. We invite you to correspond with our organization regarding ways in which we can bring about positive and much-needed change in the lives of undocumented students.

We sincerely thank you for your efforts and look forward to hearing back from your organization.

Sincerely,

The DREAM Act Portal

Our goal is obviously to get a National DREAM Day enacted (one on par with the advocacy days of last year), but at the very least we can start a dialog with other DREAM orgs. Thanks again everyone!
