Reid said it’s his understanding that Minority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t oppose bringing the immigration bill to the floor, and Reid said he is “grateful” to his Republican colleague.

In his opening remarks, McConnell did not mention the immigration bill.

Reid also said he will push for a vote on freezing student loan rates this week, likely in the form of a side-by-side vote on Senate Democrats’ plan that would freeze the rates for a year “without adding a penny to the deficit” and another from Republicans.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said the Democratic proposal would close tax loopholes on energy companies and non-U.S. entities.

Reid panned the House-passed student loan bill, which would allow rates to float rather than locking in federal rates at 3.4 percent.

“If we do nothing, it would double the rates. If we do what the House wants, it will triple the rates. So we can’t do that. College is already unaffordable for too many young people,” Reid said.

But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called Reid’s plan a “short-term fix” that would result in “permanent tax hikes.” McConnell said Republicans and the White House are close on student loans and that “there’s no reason the president should hold campaign-style events bashing Republicans.”

“We’re not that far apart,” McConnell said. “Neither party wants to see the rates rise in July.”

75 yays or 100 yays..This bill is going nowhere in the House. Non-DACA immigrants should start packing their bags. I know I said the House will pass it this time but looking at recent developments that would take a miracle.

Or the lack of them I should've mentioned. There is no consensus. The House Republicans don't care about their elections. Their racist ideology is too big to compromise. There is no concrete evidence that there will be a bill in the House besides an basic "agreement on principle" This same crap happened in 2010 when in the Senate they killed DA. This time its even a bigger uphill battle as there are way too many House Reps to worry about. They'll never vote for the Senate bill. Democrats should just consider tossing this citizenship provision out of this bill and allow us to just drive, work, and travel. Sounds absurd but might as well go through with it. Hate to speak for everyone but there should be no health care benefits at all for us. If we want our own health care, we must purchase it independently or get it through your employers. We should not be entitled to foods stamps either no matter how bad our family situations are and no matter how much our kids are at a risk of starving. We have the experience to cope with issues like this. But if we have the ability to work, drive, travel it will be much easier to cope with these lack of benefits. We can't have our cake and eat it too. Democrats must budge now and make the RPI status in their bill perpetual...

@2face: No. Because then they will lower the standard even more into the ridiculous. You can drive, work and travel, but then they will tell you how, where and when. See the Florida example of authorized presence (DACA) and denial of driver's licenses. And to remove all sorts of safety nets for kids is unrealistic and dangerous, you will have opposition from everyone to these, from our 'allies' and the opposition. And I think it's immoral.

I've written this Maureen Dowd quote before, "the minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for" - the immigrant community and our 'allies' in govmt acceded to all the security benchmarks that were part of the 2007 immigration deal and then some, and it's now nowhere near enough according to Republicans. Because of human imagination, they will come up with hundreds of other security-related 'ideas' and so security can never be met according to them. And on and on. You get my drift.
