Amendment to DA - Must graduate first!

http://www.latimes.com/news/politics...,1562542.story

WASHINGTON – Part-time college student Ray Jose arrived at Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin’s office this week with an overriding goal: To convince the West Virginia Democrat to back off his proposal to stiffen the educational requirements in the Dream Act section of the bipartisan immigration bill.

The Dream Act is among the more popular, and less contested, parts of the Senate immigration overhaul – a provision that would allow young people who were brought to the United States as minors to receive green cards more swiftly if they serve in the military or attend college.

Manchin, perhaps the most conservative Democrat in the Senate, is proposing an amendment to toughen the measure. He wants to prevent Dreamers, as the young immigrants call themselves, from access to the bill’s expedited five-year path to permanent legal status until they graduate from “any institution of higher learning,” according to a summary. Without graduating, they would be on the same 10-year path as most other immigrants.
sounds fine to me. I think they should even push it further that the degree come from an accredited institution, not just ANY institution.

I agree with you on this.

That amendment wasn't in there? I like it. Beggars can't be choosers. I hope there is also some way of verifying the graduate diplomas are legit. I know some people who faked diplomas and transcripts in order to apply for DACA. It makes me sick. . .

Erm, this is fair and all. But what does graduate mean exactly? Any 2-year, 4-year or trade school certificate?

Also, what about military hopefuls?

This is dumb. There's maybe a $50/wk difference in average income between the two groups (2 years, no degree, and 2 years, Associate's). Not sure why we think a kid who left Harvard without a degree after 2 years to start a computer company should be disadvantaged compared to a kid who went to Houston Community College and got an AA. I'm not trying to put down CC's, btw, just pointing out that it's not as clear-cut as it seems.

As for accredited v. non-accredited, yeah, fair enough.

i think its a good idea, like you guys said beggars can't be choosers. Would suck if they wanted something higher than an Associates. Just means i would have to work harder at getting one :P
