Rep Chris Collins: Co chair of House trump caucus

Quote:

Collins is co-chairman of the House Trump Caucus and was the first member of Congress to endorse him.
He was Trump’s first congressional advocate on television and spent many votes on the House floor explaining to colleagues why Trump could and would win the presidential election.

Trump, who is known for placing a high value on loyalty, will likely turn to some his early backers to take his agenda to Congress.

So, what are his views when it comes to immigration? Pretty interesting take on what he thinks "deportation" should consist of.

Quote:

Trump made immigration central to his candidacy, and after a meeting with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan on Capitol Hill Thursday, he said immigration was his top priority.
As for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the country, Rep. Chris Collins of New York, one of Trump's earliest backers, said deporting them is not part of the plan and that after the border is secure and the "criminal element" is removed, Collins predicts some sort of legalization for the undocumented.
"I think we can do fundamental immigration reform," he said

One more star to be aligned.

sounds great but:

We don't know how long it will take to secure the border and it all depends on how "secure" they want it to be.
We also don't know what merits criminality. Any criminal record? Any misdemeanor?

I think I've heard from various politicians and Trump that they can secure the border fairly quickly. The issue with immigration reform was that the republicans weren't willing to play ball with Obama or even let's say a President Clinton on the issue. It's kind of ironic but Trump may be our best bet to get some legalization plan signed into law.

Quote:

Well, legal status is what I was talking about,” said Ryan.

“Look, I've written extensively about my views on immigration,” Ryan continued. “I'm an open book on the subject. But by the way, on immigration, I don't think we can trust the president on this issue.”

“He tried to go around Congress with executive order,” said Ryan.

Todd asked: “You're taking it off the table?”

“Absolutely,” said Ryan.

“The president has proven himself untrustworthy on this issue, because he tried to unilaterally rewrite the law himself,” said the speaker. “Presidents don't write laws. Congress does. The president's proven himself to be untrustworthy on this issue.

“I think if we reach consensus on something like border enforcement, interior security, that's one thing,” said Ryan. “But I do not believe we should advance comprehensive immigration legislation with a president who's proven himself untrustworthy on this issue.”

Like it or not, they are more willing to trust Trump on this issue than they would a democratic president. Comprehensive immigration reform would have passed under Bush if they had a speaker like Ryan in Control. Problem was Speaker Hasert wasn't as supportive of immigration reform at that time and refused to go to conference over it.

Of course they don't want Obama or the democrats to get any credit for anything. With them controlling congress and the presidency though they won't have any scapegoats to blame anymore.

I think CIR would've passed under Bush if 9/11 didn't happen. That thing set us back a good decade.
