Halfway through med school, undocumented students worry Trump will derail their progr

Quote:

Linda Brubaker, dean of the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola, estimates that there are 65 DACA medical students currently enrolled in medical schools across the nation. Their dreams and Ramos’ may be put on hold, though, because President-elect Donald Trump opposes the DACA program. As president, he will have the authority to end it.

Quote:

The Stritch School currently has 642 medical students, 28 of whom are undocumented and have work authorization through DACA. The chairman of the department of medical education, Dr. Mark Kuczewski, says they are committed to keeping them in the program because they bring unique skill sets and many languages.

65... That number seems fairly low. Maybe I should make that 66 :D.

Why are there so few DACA people going to medical school? What's the big obstacle for someone with DACA to go to med school?

I had the same question, but I honestly think a lot of people gave up on medical school and/or may have transitioned to other careers in the medical field. I know a few people here have said they are Physician Assistants, which means they at some point may have been on track to possibly attend medical school.

Just going to add that this article refers to just one medical school

I believe it says nationwide, I don't know how they track the numbers. Many of us like to remain as low key as possible so there might be many more. Also, not all med schools allow DACA students. That is the reason why Loyola has 28 out of the 66 students referenced in the article.

The answer's simple. DACA was implemented in 2012; meaning those that are barely finishing a 4 yr degree can contemplate med school. Anyone pre-DACA knew that med school was a no go as doing a residency required a work permit. Impossible pre-DACA. I assume some of those in med-school programs probably realized it was now possible mid-degree (and were smart enough to choose a program that was tailored for med school).
