What Democrats can do to save Dreamers

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/0...reamers-242632

“If I thought there were an opportunity to pass a broader immigration bill, I’d be pushing for a broader immigration bill. I don’t think we have that opportunity, realistically,” Muñoz, former President Barack Obama’s chief domestic policy adviser, told POLITICO editor Carrie Budoff Brown in the latest episode of the Women Rule podcast. “Stay focused on the DREAM Act. It’s going to be challenging to get that done.”

Muñoz predicted that the DREAM Act — a bill that would provide a path to permanent legal status for Dreamers — could be passed in as little as three months. That’s well within the six-month time frame Trump gave Congress to legislate a fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

The DREAM Act is “well-known. Its terms are well-established,” added Muñoz, who helped craft Obama’s strategy around DACA. “And if it doesn’t happen, you have a catastrophe.”

Correct, CIR can't get in the way of DA when there are 800k lives at stake. Try to get DA passed and then start working on CIR if you want.

Try and communicate that to UWD.

Re: What Democrats can do to save Dreamers

I pray every day that a permanent solution is here very soon.

DreamAct should have been the first step towards immigration reform.

Republicans supported this in 2006, 2007, and during the Obama administration, and Democrats shut it down, including Munoz. Stay away.

ACLU dropped a million signatures in support of DreamAct to Congress yesterday. Let's hold Democrats and Republicans alike accountable. We have been told that DreamAct is going to be offered in September, Sen. Schumer et al need to bring this to a vote soon.

Pass the DreamAct.

You know that Schumer can't bring it up himself. If McConnell and Ryan brought it up for a vote today, it would pass.

If McConnell stated that the debt ceiling is not being revisited until 2018, then what exact fiscal bill is DreamAct going to be attached to??

The one that keeps the government running and avoids a shutdown. The debt ceiling has to do with borrowing money and is a different issue.

Either way, I doubt Republicans would want to take separate votes on those two issues

Another continuing resolution?

Thanks for the clarification. I thought they were one in the same.

Maybe, they'll probably do another CR to fund until after the midterms, but the current continuing resolution runs out in December and they need votes from Democrats. The last thing Republicans want is a government shutdown on their watch and right around Christmas time too.
