Paris Fashion Week’s Latest Statement Tee Tackles the DREAM Act
https://www.vogue.com/article/off-wh...-dream-act/amp
Last night, at Vogue’s Americans in Paris cocktail, a new slew of slogan tees appeared on the backs of models (Dilone, Martha Hunt among them) and other fashion figures, in town to enjoy the Spring 2018 shows. Fashion is no stranger to slogans, which continue to make the rounds this season, and at first sight these appeared to fit the mold: basic black cotton with the words “We Are All Dreamers” in white block font. The message falls in line with the surge of optimism and strength seen elsewhere, but in fact, the shirts take more direct aim at U.S. politics and the pressing issues surrounding immigration. The tees were created by Off-White’s Virgil Abloh, in collaboration with Laurene Powell’s Emerson Collective, to support the DREAM Act, a bipartisan bill reintroduced in July to provide a direct path to U.S. citizenship for undocumented immigrants who meet certain conditions. There are approximately 800,000 of these young undocumented immigrants, who were brought to the U.S. as children, but lack a clear path to legal status and live in fear of deportation. When the Trump administration announced in September its intention to repeal DACA, a 2012 federal program that provided basic protections, passing the DREAM Act became more important than ever. To wear the tee is a message of solidarity, the goal to raise awareness about the DREAM Act and Congress’s need to pass it. Keep an eye out this fall—with any luck, they’ll be everywhere. |

As a fashion obsessed dreamer who ultimately wants to work in fashion, this touches me. All those people wearing the shirt in the article are HUGE in the industry and have big followings.

I work in fashion and the industry is overwhelmingly pro-immigrant and pro-dreamer. My company has been so supportive throughout this entire time and is my # 1 cheerleader. Major major props to Virgil Abloh for using his platform to spread the message!!

Re: Paris Fashion Week’s Latest Statement Tee Tackles the DREAM Act
The last thing I want to say that I thought about today in regards to this, is that more of our "allies" should follow the lead and should also be straight up advocating for the DREAM act.
"Protect DACA" is great and all and the support is there, but we need more push for a permeant solution. I'm done. |
