McCarthy Says DACA Fix Unlikely Before End Of The Year

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Friday a legislative fix to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is unlikely to be taken up before the end of the year.

The California Republican — who is a member of the GOP’s eight-person DACA working group — said while discussions are taking place, the lower chamber is currently pressed to complete other time-sensitive matters before the end of the year.

“Well you know, DACA you have until March. I don’t see the answer to that yet, because you’ve got to have border security as well, but I see progress being made,” McCarthy told The Daily Caller Friday. “Right now we have the funding of government — we’ve got to get that done, and then I believe we’ll get DACA done in time before that deadline.”

While House Republican leadership has repeatedly said they would prefer DACA to be passed as a stand-alone bill, a rising number of GOP lawmakers are calling for it to be attached to must-pass legislation.

Republican Virginia Rep. Scott Taylor is spearheading a letter, which is rumored to have upwards of 30 GOP signatures, calling for action to be taken before the end of the year that’s expected to be sent to House Speaker Paul Ryan early next week.

Florida Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo said he refuses to vote for any spending measure that doesn’t include a provision on the program, which protects individuals who entered the country illegally as children from deportation.

McCarthy told TheDC language on DACA won’t be attached to the upcoming short-term continuing resolution, which has to pass if lawmakers want to keep the government open after Dec. 8.

Top Democrats have repeatedly said they want to find a permanent, bipartisan solution for the program. Theoretically, if enough Republicans get on board with a Democratic-led plan, they could bypass GOP leadership’s plans.

Despite a handful of lawmakers pushing to act the close of 2017, McCarthy said he’s not concerned members of his conference will attempt to buck leadership’s timeline on the issue.

“No — there’s a lot of people that want to make sure they solve the DACA issue, but we’ve got to do it right,” he told TheDC.
...In short, they are bringing this down to the wire in March.

That’s what he wants. Doesn’t mean he will get it his way. He also said this in the morning. Before all the other news came.

it should pass by the 8th or by the 22nd of this month now that tax reform is done.

idk what issues this fool is talking about, daca is now at the forefront of the debate.

other time sensitive issues such as chip, csr, military spending, border sec/wall, etc can all be addressed with daca in the year end spending/omnibus bill.

Actually, when March comes, they will find some other way to obstruct it. But even if it is brought to the floor in March, it will fail since Dems may have no leverage. Repubes will ask for all of their demands to be met in exchanges for throwing us a small bone like the Bridge Act.

No pushing it back. At least 70 Republicans want this fixed by this December. Get this shit done lazy ass. You have had YEARS to do it the right way. If they push this back beyond this December, they will want mote border security concessions. At that point, what leverage will Democrats have?

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) discusses on the HillCast Power Politics podcast how Congress will handle a legislative fix for young undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Hill's Alexis Simendinger and Reid Wilson, McCarthy voices confidence that a legislative solution could be reached within the next four months and discusses Democrats' sweep of last month's elections in Virginia, among other topics.
He is full of shit . I listened to this whole interview and when they asked about their agenda for 2018, he didn’t even mention DACA. He actually was talking about entitle reform and infrastructure. Until the reporters called him out on it did he claim he hopes they can get it done by March . Fuck him! He actually said with a straight face that Democrats were to blame for not going to that meeting with trump.

If Dems do not stand their ground, we are screwed.

The GOP rushed through the damn tax bill, but it wants to take its sweet time on DACA.

No more pushing back the issue. Shut the government down.

Exactly. The GOP leadership plan is to try to make Dems lose leverage on this issue. Then they pass the harshest and restrictive bill even worse than the bridge act with a ton of enforcement at the last minute.

If DA is not coupled with omnibus, then it will be DA + Raise

It might as well crash and burn
