Daily DACA Round-Up: 1/8/18
Tried this a couple weeks ago... Holidays hit so I took a break, but I'll try to do a round-up of all the important developments in the DACA/Dream Act World.
The big storyline today is... Tomorrow, really. The White House is hosting a bipartisan group of legislators to discuss immigration. Hispanic Caucus is not happy about the meeting, however. Quote:
The White House released the list of those attending the meeting, including a notoriously anti-immigration Stephen Miller. Fourteen senators (9 R, 5 D; Including Cotton, Durbin, Flake, Graham and Perdue) and six congressmen are attending the meeting. (https://twitter.com/seungminkim/stat...244545/photo/1) Meanwhile, a couple big developments have happened executive-wise and legislative-wise: First, DHS is revoking TPS from 200k+ Salvadorians. They will have until Sept. 9. 2019 to leave the U.S. Some senators are discussing the possibility of allocating 50k-ish GC given through diversity visa lottery to those affected by TPS. (https://twitter.com/seungminkim/stat...05477863038977) Second, two congressmen, Will Hurd (R-TX) and Pete Aguilar (D-CA), have released their own proposal, which includes a pathway to citizenship for "qualifying individuals" in exchange for the increase in immigration judges and attorneys and additional technological, financial and physical investment in border security. But most importantly, the proposal is a "working draft," and the party leaderships on both sides has yet to endorse this proposal. (https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/08/polit...led/index.html) In terms of rhetoric, Democrats and Republicans are setting themselves up for a blame game, and Republicans are again floating the possibility of another CR into February. Rep. Curbelo (R-FL) again stated his opposition to another CR without a DACA fix (https://twitter.com/ChadPergram/stat...32322352402433), but some Democratic legislators remain skeptical that they will vote to shut down the government. Quote:
Republicans are stressing a need to get something that they can sell as a wall. Democrats don't think they will vote on passing a DACA fix if it includes funding for a wall. Quote:
Meanwhile, here are some interesting articles and remarks: Quote:

A court case on DACA is also moving along. (https://www.law.com/newyorklawjourna...20180008212013) That's it for now! If there's anything missing, let me know. I'll see you tomorrow. May God smile in our favor. |
Re: Daily DACA Round-Up: 1/8/18
That's why Republicans keep punting and pass CRs because theuy know Democrats don't have the courage to stand up in the senate. Even Dems from safe blue states..

This is from last week about the court case that was interesting argument: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The California attorney general says a tweet by President Donald Trump shows the true motivation behind his decision to end a program protecting some young immigrants from deportation. The Dec. 29 tweet says there can be no Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program without a wall on the Mexico border and other immigration changes. In a court filing Tuesday with U.S. District Judge William Alsup, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said the tweet is additional evidence that the president wanted to make DACA recipients a bargaining chip. U.S. Department of Justice spokesman Devin O'Malley declined comment. The agency previously said the administration ended the program amid the possibility of a lawsuit against it. Alsup is considering five lawsuits that seek to reinstate DACA. The program was enacted by President Barack Obama and has protected about 800,000 people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children or came with families who overstayed visas. http://bakersfieldnow.com/news/local...argaining-chip |

@KasieDC
Our interview with @JoaquinCastrotx: KASIE: Do you think that Democrats should withhold votes from a bill, to help Dreamers, if it includes funding for the wall? CASTRO: I will certainly vote against it, and I know most Democrats will vote against it. |

Re: Daily DACA Round-Up: 1/8/18
That last quote: Lindsey Graham describing Trump's approach to a DACA deal: "He has been very refreshing, like 'I want to get a deal, I have nothing against these kids, I just want to get my wall.'"
Fuck just give him part of the wall, call it border security, repair of fences. I understand is a symbol of racism but a lot of Dems voted for wall in 2006. If anything, it can get slowed down or something when they take back power |
