legalize millions of the undocumented through the special budget "reconciliation"

I extracted this excerpt from CNN news, apparently the Dems only need 51 votes (K. Harris included) to pass any immigration legislation thru a budget reconciliation process. ;)

If this is true, then the possibility to pass an immigration bill (DA and/or CIR) looks real good right now imo, possbly even this year .

But Biden and the immigration advocates face a challenge that will shadow almost all aspects of his legislative agenda: The threat to freeze out Republicans and pass immigration legislation solely with Democratic votes works only if every Senate Democrat is willing to vote to end the filibuster -- or to legalize millions of the undocumented through the special budget "reconciliation" process that allows bills to clear the upper chamber with 51 votes (including a tie-breaking vote from Vice President Kamala Harris).

fyi, this article explains how reconciliation works:

https://budget.house.gov/publication...liation-basics

And after reading it, I don't see why an immigration bill wouldn't qualify to be introduced in a budget reconciliation process, it meets all the criteria.

There are several Democrats, especially in the deep-red state who won't votes yes. 11M is a hard sell that won't fly, plain and simple. Dems will lose the house and the senate if they try this.. but it is a great way to raise money and donations to their cause.

Reconciliation also implies costs, you're going to have to associate a cost to the immigration plan. That is difficult to quantify in the context of the bill. Daca and TPS is well documented and is an established program, so it may be easier to pass through the reconciliation because they already have a lot of data on it.

From what we have seen, it is possible to get a small narrow bill through but CIR is most likely dead in the current political environment.

Yeah daca and tps can pass budget reconciliation because they already know what the costs would be and exactly how many ppl would qualify. CIR is a tough sell in budget reconciliation. I don’t even see that passing if democrats nuke the filibuster. Maybe...

Yeah, I was thinking the same, but maybe the Dems could convince 1 Rep to join them.

I can see a clean DA passing thru budget reconciliation with 51+ Dems, otherwise it will be a a legislation to legalize DACA only population with 60+ senators.

Manchin wouldn't be the only one. I find it hard to believe all 49 others will vote together. There surely must be other Blue Dog Dems. They killed the original DA in 2010.

This is never going to happen. CIR will happen only through a special legislation. Dems will never do any special procedures with CIR. This is their bread and butter topic. They will squeeze the hell out of it as much as possible.

Fake news.

The budget reconciliation is only for spending and taxes.

Congress has never used this to pass immigration legislation.

Next!
