Grassley says GOP pressing for immigration policy in Israel, Ukraine aid package

Quote:

Senator Chuck Grassley says if Republicans in the U.S. Senate stick together, they may be able to force Democrats to put immigration policy changes in an aid package for Israel and Ukraine.

“Making it more certain who can qualify for asylee,” Grassley says, “the ‘return to Mexico’ issue that Trump put in place — in other words, stay in Mexico while you’re making application to see if you can enter the U.S. legally and maybe some interior enforcement.”

President Biden has proposed security funding for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan along with targeted funding to address U.S. border security, fentanyl smuggling and help U-S cities struggling to accommodate migrants. Grassley says a bipartisan group of senators are discussing the addition of immigration policy changes that also would address border security.

“As long as 41 Republicans stick together to do something at the border and the (Biden) administration wants money for Isreal and Ukraine like a lot of senators do, including this one, we might force our hand to do something significant on border security,” Grassley says.

Earlier this month, the U.S. House passed a bill to provide over $14 billion in aid to Israel and cut funding to the IRS, but the U.S. Senate’s Democratic leader says senators will consider a bipartisan package that aligns with President Biden’s request.
What the Republicans want is to cut asylum and go after long-settled immigrants in exchange for weapons. 11 million undocumented people get 0 help from Democrats in exchange for triple the amount of money for the border and the Trump wall at the request of the White House. This is an opportunity for Democrats to provide some legalization program for undocumented people.

Unfortunately, the GOP already came out against adding any pathways to citizenship to the package and it seems like the Dems are leaning that way as well. We have zero momentum going our way right now, especially with what is happening at the border and the flood of asylum seekers in cities.

Seems like Dem are unwilling to even consider a temporary extension of DACA or some immigration program.

Democrats: We can't pass any immigration reform because Republicans control the House and when we controlled the house, we couldn't do anything because we don't have a supermajority in the Senate.

...Fair point but why is it that in the exact same climate, Republicans still manage to pass anti-immigration legislature and not give anything back in return?

Because Dems don't know how to play dirty.

I think the Dems always want to be seen as having the moral high ground and take Ls because of it.

Let's not forget that they had the House and the 60 Senate votes during Obama's first year and chose to do nothing. It was only after the house was lost, that they chose to take up immigration. It was from that point on, that I started to believe that Democrats only saw us as tools to get elected.

Because they are lying and not doing the work.

Well, Healthcare Reform was Obama's big promise so I get why he wanted that to be the first thing he got through but yeah I don't get why they didn't push through immigration reform while they had the chance. God knows that Republicans would push immigration restrictions if they had that kind of power...and they did with the Patriot Act, Real ID, etc.

My Naive side thinks that maybe he believed that Obamacare would be so popular that they could pass anything else they wanted to lately instead of getting their asses handed to them at the next election.

Its not that they didn't know how, they don't want to play at all. Look, we don't even need sweeping immigration reform if we're being honest. We could survive on smaller aspects to make our lives much easier to come out of the shadows and yet Biden is literally doing nothing. Hell, at least before they use to make a thinly veiled attempt and then blame Republicans. Now they're not even trying.

There will always be some issue that will take priority over helping us while newer immigrants from Venezuela and Ukraine get insta social security cards, work permits and housing.

Good luck to us all.
