Media = Recognition

So a few days ago I was talking to this person ( a professional) who has been trying to help me so much. He knows what career I want and had been trying to help me get into the industry and connecting me with different companies. Anyhow, I had to let him know my situation. It was hard, and I was nervous because I didn't really know how he saw the issue of immigration, but I took a chance. Apparently he was completely unaware that such a thing was going on. He said "thank you for opening my eyes about this issue," - he had no idea! and "I think some people should be deported, but you need to be in the workforce."
What does this show? LACK of awareness on the subject matter. People DO NOT know. Why? Because this issue is unique in how it keeps those of us affected.. hiding... it's not safe to just come out and tell everyone what state we're in... or defend our situation. This is what we need...
MEDIA, MEDIA, and MEDIA... Contacting newspapers, magazines, television shows, radio stations, it has to be in the mainstream media....
Quake/citizenhope/MAGrad and everyone else ... If you have any ideas which involve the media - email me immediately!! plz. Thank you!

I do see the importance in this... but I don't know how effective it will be. If everyone in the country knows about this, will they give a crap enough to help us voice our issue? Maybe I am too cynical but if I was a citizen and I heard about this, I personally wouldn't give a rat's behind and send an email to a senator...

I was thinking more in terms of calling, faxing, marching for the senate. Do you guys think we should also raise awareness as well for this next year?

Agreed. There's this artist/model on Myspace (go figure lol) her name is Somaya Reece. I'm sure if you're Hispanic you've heard of her. Anyway, she's REALLY humble & caring, answers her fans, cooperates, and is always talking about how she came from nothing to something in California, and I'm sure her parents are immigrants. Maybe if we can get something well written and informed, asking her to get Media attention about it, she could help us? just a thought.

I am working on 'gay' media right now with this story we are doing ... It should reach segments of population that usually read only 'entertainment' news but are probably going to be very receptive to our circumstances (especially if I 'come out' as an 'illegal')

I think YGAA is concentrating on ethnic media contacts and weeklies... I better mail her a list this weekend.

One of our target audiences should be educators at every level. I feel most would be willing to call and write to people in D.C. just like we do if we gave them more information. It would be great if we could produce some pieces directed just to them.
