Congress to Consider Tuition Legislation

Quote:

In an interview with the Gannett News Service last month, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), said President-elect Barack Obama (D) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) had reached a consensus on how to move forward on a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

The bill, which was modeled in part after the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act - a piece of proposed federal legislation that would have provided achieving undocumented high school students who arrived to the United States as young children the opportunity to earn conditional permanent residency - would include provisions allowing undocumented students access to certain federal programs including student financial aid, clearing the path to permanent residency for immigrant students and making it easier for states to charge in-state tuition rates to some illegal immigrants.

Why do these idiots keep making it about financial aid?:-x

Btw, if Ben Cardin's comments were recent then it's good news then.

Pieces of the bill, which were taken from the DREAM Act, would also stipulate a passage for undocumented immigrants to earn legal status, which Cardin says is long overdue.

"Currently, our immigration laws prevent thousands of young people from pursuing their dreams and fully contributing to our nation's future," Cardin said. "It would give a select group of undocumented students the chance to become permanent residents if they came to this country as children, are long-term U.S. residents, have good moral character and enlist in the military or attend college for at least two years."

Jennifer said she has grown up in the United States and hopes to stay here, but without a college degree, her future seems uncertain.

"What is next?" she asked. "Should I go to work in a restaurant? Or go back to my country, where I don't see a future? All I want is for the politicians to support a bill that will help me get through college."

Cardin said that enabling undocumented students to go to school is not only a step toward improving individual lives, but also a step toward bettering the country as a whole.

"The children eligible for benefits under the [legislation] have demonstrated the kind of determination and commitment that makes them successful students and points the way to the significant contributions they will make in their lives," Cardin said. "Their parents brought them to the United States when they were young children, and for many, America is the only home they know."

Re: Congress to Consider Tuition Legislation

Wait, so are they speaking of a CIR bill with a DREAM Act component? Not DREAM Act as a stand-alone?

Hell, I'm just happy they seem to not have forgotten hehe :) Time to kick into high gear I suppose

I'm getting more and more confused about this "financial aid" business. Once DREAM passes, will we or will we not be able to (according to it's current language of course) apply for FAFSA? and if we're able too, how will that affect us in the long run? will they frown upon it when citizenship comes into play because we've become federally dependent at one point in our lives or does that only apply if we file for welfare? I've read so many different things I'm just not even sure. Grrrr.

Passage of the Federal Dream Act would give undocumented students the opportunity to receive federal financial aid and open a pathway to citizenship.

Students with conditional permanent resident status would be able to work, drive, and go to school and otherwise participate in day-to-day activities on the same terms as other Americans except that they generally would not be able to travel abroad for lengthy periods and they would not be eligible for Pell Grants or certain other federal financial aid grants.

It does state however that each State would not be restricted from providing their own financial aid..

But, me being from Jersey, It isn't abnormal for one to go to school in NYC, in which case I'd be screwed, lol. IDK whats right and whats wrong tho.
