Texas DREAM Supporters Organize

We should try to organize in Texas a little more. Since people have informally volunteered to help in Texas, it's a good place to start DAP's "real" life organizational activities. Tentatively named "AIM". Long Term Objectives For Texas:

1) One trip to visit the offices of the two Senators (and house reps you may think are on the fence) to lobby for DREAM. Cornyn wouldn't meet with DREAMers last time so we should send citizens to his office. Maybe, some people from I2US and our organization could collaborate.

2) If anyone is interested in doing more after the trip we could try to set up visits to certain high schools and informing kids that they can go to college. Good volunteer opportunity to put on resumes.

I'm looking for citizens supporters of DREAM and few DREAMies. Reply to this thread or PM me if you're interested.

I'll get getting in touch with them as after I know how many people we have and what dates those people are available. The one person who informally offered has a really erratic schedule. The trip won't go down until early next year and it will be a one time thing.

I should be going to ATX at least once a month starting in January. Willing to help out but need guidance as I'm not a politician nor understand their logic. I''ve also volunteered to speak about this issue at a college/career fair in the coming months...they're are providing me the presentation material but if any of you guys have more to offer or thinks should be mentioned let me know.

Be careful. The last time undocumented students tried to meet Sen. Cornyn back in 2007, the Sen. refused to meet them and would only meet with citizen immigration activists that accompanied them. He said these undocumented students were "flaunting" their illegal status.

Cornyn rejects students

Quote:

Three Dallas students who traveled to Washington on Wednesday had high hopes for the bill's passage.

All of them entered the U.S. before they were 11, brought by Mexican parents seeking work, they said.

It was their first trip to Washington and they were dressed for important meetings with senators. A meeting with Ms. Hutchison's staff lasted about a half-hour. But Mr. Cornyn would not allow them into his office because they were not legal residents, he said.

Smarting from that rejection, one of the students, an 18-year-old woman, said she would have told Mr. Cornyn: "Put yourself in our shoes. Try to imagine your life as an immigrant."

Mr. Cornyn said his staff met with Larry James and Silvia Bustos, immigration activists from Dallas who accompanied the students. But his staff would not meet with people "who admit to not being legally in the country or are here in violation of immigration laws – basically flaunting that," Mr. Cornyn said.

Though the three students said they were seeking legal avenues to citizenship, they nevertheless live under the threat of deportation, said Mr. James, a Dallas pastor and president of Central Dallas Ministries.

What a bastard that Cornyn is. No one takes into account motive when it comes to immigration. To **** like these, any fact beside "illegal" doesn't matter.

I can imagine him saying this: "I don't care if you were a child when the crime was committed, and that there's nothing even close to feasible you can do to fix it, derrrr illegal is illegal derrrr!!!!"

It makes my blood boil!!!!!!

I don't think Cornyn is a good target for any campaign. There is absolutely no way he will ever vote for DREAM.

He's done it once before, he voted for it in 2004 (maybe late 2003) in the Judiciary committee. Cornyn needs to change if he wants another term. Noreiga was too close for comfort and next time it's going to be even worse. He voted for DREAM once and against it once. I think he's up for grabs.
