The December survey of 1,007 Latinos nationwide said only one in three people identified immigration as an extremely important issue. On a list of the nation’s most pressing issues that was led by the economy and followed by education, healthcare, national security and the environment, immigration ranked sixth.


Mark Krikorian predicted the new president will reduce the number of deportations and workplace raids as a way to appease people pushing for immigration reform. He may push the voluntary E-Verify online systems designed to help employers check on a worker’s immigration status.
It’s too politically dangerous for the president to push for comprehensive reform that includes a path to residency for illegal residents, said Krikorian, leader of a Center for Immigration Studies think tank that advocates more enforcement against illegal immigrants.
But he does think Obama may support smaller bills like the DREAM Act, which offers legal status to young adults who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.
“He’s going to throw some bones to the pro-amnesty crowd,” Krikorian said

I'm glad he didn't say "...which offers a path to citizenship and instate tuition to illegal immigrants."

Seems that everyone's saying that DA can be a down payment for CIR; hope they're right...

How does this think tank generate these type of statistics? I mean are they polling from a selected region and generalizing the whole view of the Hispanic community in the states? WTF!

It doesn't matter in what spirit DREAM passes (as a bone to the immigration refom crowd or as a piece of legislation that carries moral urgency); as long as it passes.

So, I'm happy to hear this and other predictions like this. Also, www.change.org posted a bulletin yesterday in which they said they were going to kick off their national campaigns next week (with grassroots support to provide a major part of the momentum, of course.)

the Dream ACT is a small bone compared to CIR but it's the bone i want and need.

mark my words "dream act" will pass. i can say that with confidence is beacuse this country needs to see the leaders of tomorrow, and most of us are highly educated all we'd love to stay here because we grew up here. i'd request everyone to stay positive and focused because no matter what we have to keep pur spirits up.
