Look, I am 28 and soon the Dream Act would not cover me. I need this bill really bad. Also, just having the Dream Act pass in a month could make my life so easy. Still, I have been undocumented for 15 years, I can wait for a couple of months. That is the optimist in me.
Now, we can all call him and tell him to get the Dream Act as a stand alone bill and email, faxing and letter. Those are sugestions and it does not fit their "big picture." You can see that he sees this as an education issue but more as an immigration issue. They want a big piece of legislation to show that the democrats and the new administration are taking care of business, not like those pesky Republicans. In case CIR fails, they can always blame the Republicans of filibustering the 59 democrats in the senate- even though some of those Democrats are probably not that into CIR.
They only way to make them put the Dream Act as a stand alone bill or attached to an education bill is if we have the political power to forced them to do it. If we have it, we can force them to go against their grand plan and do what is more convenient for us.
Although some big organizations are truly pushing for CIR- yo Catholic Church!- many of them will not move their butts for just the Dream Act, they want the whole enchilada. Still, pushing and getting CIR is very hard to do.
What I think is going to happen is that CIR is going to come and we, as a smaller group, will have to ride that pony. Then, if CIR fails, we will need to summon our great mental and emotional capacity to keep the CIR momentum and push for it and get it done for the end of the year. So instead of calling it CIR will be calling it CIR and the Dream Act.
Again, this is not what I want but what feel the future will be- this is the indenial part of me. I don't like it mostly because it brings bitter memories of the past. When after CIR we galvanized ourselves just to see "them" filibustering Dream. It also reminds me of Tancredo making threats to all the undocumented students that were going to lobby in D.C with ICE.
