White House aide: Serious about immigration reform

Cecilia Munoz, an aide to President Obama, told 800 immigrant rights activists that the President is serious about passing immigration reform. She countered pundits who have said that Obama wants to give the appearance of supporting reform to assuage Latino voters, but that he has no intention of using up his political capital in a fight for the controversial reforms needed. "Nobody is doing this for show", Munoz told the audience.
Her words came on the heels of Harry Reid's promise to try to get immigration reform passed by the end of the year and Nancy Pelosi's encouraging words on the issue.
The campaign in Congress has already begun and has considerable support in both houses. However, the Supreme Court confirmation hearings are likely to chew up most of the Senate Judiciary Com.'s time over the Summer leaving them with a narrow window for passage of reform in the Fall. The House has already indicated that it expects reform legislation to originate in the Senate.
