There is no way republicans can gain a majority in either house next year, except an unexpected event happens (ie.Terrorist attack). Even if with that, they would have to gain more than 40 seats in the House. That has never happened in US history, and it won't happen because the Republican brand is in the gutter. Let's not even mention the Senate, because the republicans are in a bad position with so many retiring members. If the economy continues to improve and a heath care bill passes, they will be a minority party for quite a while. That is why they are trying to kill reform. (See 1930s-1940s)

The worst thing that can happen is if some sort of independent party pops up. This is actually a great time for one to show up, since people uncomfortable with the Obama administration need somewhere to go. They don't see democrats as effective, but they definitely wont jump back to the republicans.

The only hope for republicans is them killing off the toxic part of their part, and actually being a real conservative party. I'm not really sure what the republican party currently is, but they aren't true conservatives. (See conservative).
