WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday she was confident President Barack Obama would sign a healthcare overhaul bill this year, saying that only a few major sticking points need to be resolved.
"We'll pass healthcare insurance reform that will work for the United States," Pelosi told a news conference. "I'm confident the president will sign a bill this year."
Obama addressed a joint session of Congress on Wednesday seeking to spur lawmakers to a deal on healthcare reform, which has been dogged by disagreement among Republicans and even some Democrats over cost and the government's future role in healthcare. Pelosi said all these hurdles could be overcome.
"We will take the time it needs ... and when we are ready we will bring our legislation to the floor," Pelosi said.
