i guess drawing attention to it does help in a way though b/c it changes public opinion. dream increased in popularity in polls these recent years. but you're right that there is a lot of political interest involved and that it is kind of out of our hands.

This is exactly it.
We can't force the hand of politicians, but we can drawing peoples' attention. We can solicit thoughts and feelings. People who were ignorant about it now know.
It's essential that we do what we can to shape public opinion after we get peoples' attention.
Even if these people won't protest or march alongside us, the fact that legislators know "My constituents want justice for DREAMers" will force them to vote yes.
