PR for the elections - Yet they fool no one. I hear more and more Hispanics who plan to vote for progessive choices, not actual mainstream Democrats. The progessive choice won't win, but neither will the Dem. Tough shit. Because that's really what they have given us..."We know that DREMA and AgJobs can pass, but we don't feel we really have 60 votes (a lie as the only way to know is to vote on it). You've lived all your life in this country and are now in deportation proceedings? Tough shit. You shouldn't have gotten caught."
And basically this is what these apparently brilliant, Harvard-educated elites think is the best immigration strategy: Don't get caught. We won't let you earn the right to stay or consider your moral claim to ties in this country because it's too hard to put a short, concise, targeted legislation like DREAM into law. It's too hard apparently even though it's already written and introduced and filed. No. They want easy programs like, I don't know, indefinite TPS for certain people (and I believe this excludes them from paying taxes, but I'm not sure) and eternal right-to-enter and go-on-welfare programs for Cubans. If you are a student or young worker and have done everything possible short of turning yourself into a pretzel to be a responsible member of this society, tough shit. In this administration and Congress, any talk of immigration reform = more "enforcement", ; but this is selective because they could go on a country-wide spree and raid every farm field, hotel, restaurant and finds loads of "illegals" with really not very much effort or expense. And then the bonus is they get to fine the employers and have a windfall of revenue, so of course this is the way to go, right? (buzzer goes off) WRONG! The businesses will lobby against their re-election, so let's exploit the vulnerable a little more, but this time let's pretend that we are doing them a favor by not pulling them in masses on buses, just send NTAs to everyone caught and let the goverment lawyers fight the case to death so they can achieve a "win" rather than justice. Yep, I think that sums it up.
