Illegal immigrant students say they are ready to shed blood over the "DREAM Act" — literally.

Students are planning to donate blood Friday at Harvard University and other college blood drives. It's part of a nationally organized effort to push a federal proposal in the current Congress that would give some a pathway to citizenship through college enrollment or military service.

The immigrant students say the blood donations show they are ready to perform community service and actively demonstrate that they are part of U.S. society.

Similar immigrant blood donations have taken place in California, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas and Virginia.

Red Cross spokeswoman Stephanie Millian says blood donors need to show identification, but blood collection workers don't check immigration status.
