Religious leaders are banding together to get the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act passed.
The measure prevents the deportation of illegal immigrants who are studying at American colleges or have served in the military.

Widely known as the DREAM Act, it came close to being passed in December before being blocked by a Senate filibuster.

The legislation was reintroduced in May.

And with the Latino voting bloc growing in numbers, organizers of a new statewide effort say the time to build momentum is now.

"Let's make sure Congress hears from us so that we can make it harder for them to take a pass,” said Diane Steinman of the New York State Interfaith Network for Immigration Reform.

“Every year there's more and more support for the DREAM Act, so the bill introduction really represents the growing movement to support the DREAM Act until it passes," said Chung-Wah Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition.

The effort is part of a national initiative spearheaded by Illinois Senator Richard Durbin.
