It's quite pathetic that not more than 50 years ago in this very same country it was color that defined what you can do and you couldn't do.

Very true point. The republicans, or at least the far right immigration restrictionist wing of the party has basically been inspired by the self-deportation consensus and it's worked in combination with the current economic stagnation very well as a tool to not only frighten off prospective undocumented immigrants but also undocumented immigrants currently in the country. As for if they would cut off even more basic rights, do not be shocked if that happens. All around us we see the crumbling of the undocumented immigrant rights movement, it needs a breakthrough either this year or never.
