And, between you and I, in CA as long as you have a social, you can renew it when it expires. But shhhhh don't tell anybody, ok? You have to prove legal presence to GET a license. But after you get it, all you do is renew. You have a SSN, you're set dude. I have family that have ZERO legal presence here, but since they obtained a SSN back in the day when it was easier, they just renew. There is a dreamer with an uncle that has a deportation order but was able to renew his license bc he has a SSN.
