I understand why Durbin and the Democrats are supporting it because it is apart of their fundamental values as a party and is the very same reason why they believe in legalization.I remember reading an article that mentioned this is the amendment that keeps Schumer up at night, and rightly so.

Senator Durbin is not the issue though,Leahy is.He is the Chairman and the individual proposing the amendment to S.744 and it is very likely all Democrats will vote for the UAFA amendment meaning it could become apart of the legislation and would also be very difficult to remove from the point it leaves the Senate Judiciary. There are some ways I think this can be averted, but it will probably not make any allies with LGBT advocates.Since this site is mainly for the Dream act and support of Dreamers I think I would defer any comment or suggestive action considering LGBT dreamers could be affected as well.

Anyway,I think the reasoning that Immigration reform has been successful thus far is because we are dealing with a fractured GOP and its interests who support a lot of the fundamentals within the compromise along with traditional Democrat support, but UAFA I think would re-unify the GOP causing the party to be against the legislation. What is at issue here is it would cause the Christian right, who is also lobbying for a path to citizenship,to suddenly be against the legislation due to what the definition of Marriage is between Gay advocates vs the Christian lobby.
