For years, we've been saying that the citizenship is not an issue for us. We just wanted to get off this ride with legal residency/permanent residency, but advocacy groups have pushed
a pathway to citizenship all along and now legal status in some form or the other is precisely what we'll end up with...if anything at all.

Right. I wouldn't be shocked at them instituting an unreasonable residency requirement (i.e. 15 years of continuous residence in the U.S. to qualify).
