Donald Trump is a salesman and deals with persuasion and not facts. People vote ( and buy ) with their gut, not with their brains. He, like a good salesman, preyed on our unconscious biases.
I agree that the Democrats were overconfident. They were overconfident just like Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz and all the others that Trump was a joke. They did not see a snake oil salesman coming.

He won the states by razor thin margins. I also believe voter apathy and voter suppression were factors. In North Carolina early voting was shortened and polling sites were closed on colleges campus and minority's communities. Tough voter ID laws in some states also did not help. The voter apathy came from the primaries after Clinton endured the furry of sanders and his supporters. They refused to vote for a candidate that more closely mirrored their ideology and instead ended up with someone that was everything sanders refuted. Young people really helped throw this election to trump as well as those third party candidates.
