I think I've heard from various politicians and Trump that they can secure the border fairly quickly. The issue with immigration reform was that the republicans weren't willing to play ball with Obama or even let's say a President Clinton on the issue. It's kind of ironic but Trump may be our best bet to get some legalization plan signed into law.

Well, legal status is what I was talking about,” said Ryan.

“Look, I've written extensively about my views on immigration,” Ryan continued. “I'm an open book on the subject. But by the way, on immigration, I don't think we can trust the president on this issue.”

“He tried to go around Congress with executive order,” said Ryan.

Todd asked: “You're taking it off the table?”

“Absolutely,” said Ryan.

“The president has proven himself untrustworthy on this issue, because he tried to unilaterally rewrite the law himself,” said the speaker. “Presidents don't write laws. Congress does. The president's proven himself to be untrustworthy on this issue.

“I think if we reach consensus on something like border enforcement, interior security, that's one thing,” said Ryan. “But I do not believe we should advance comprehensive immigration legislation with a president who's proven himself untrustworthy on this issue.”

Like it or not, they are more willing to trust Trump on this issue than they would a democratic president. Comprehensive immigration reform would have passed under Bush if they had a speaker like Ryan in Control. Problem was Speaker Hasert wasn't as supportive of immigration reform at that time and refused to go to conference over it.
