We got the letter about a month before the actual interview date. A few days before that, I saw on USCIS that my case status had changed to "Interview Ready to be Scheduled".
The online case status will come before the letter--so check regularly.

@iah: There's a reason why this thread is at 190+ pages. Lots of people with lots of experiences who did your research for you. The least you could do is read through the older pages so all this info doesn't go to waste.
