I'd say that it's not about being ashamed of yout country of origin but it's merely just a way of showing that you have assimilated to American customs and beliefs.
For instace, Puerto Rican born singer, Luis Miguel considers himself 100% Mexican because he lived and was raised there since an infant. He never represents that Puerto Rican flag or considers himself that nationality.
